Using a ponar grab to capture sediment from New Haven Harbor in Connecticut. A Southern Connecticut Graduate Student demonstrates the correct method of deploying and retrieving the ponar grab. A ponar grab is a device that bites into the sea bottom to collect a sediment specimen from the first several inches of the seafloor. These students will later freeze dry their sediment samples and test for heavy metal contamination using a spectrophotometer.
