This is Meeka, she's one of our newest residents at River Bend Nature Center. She's doing what Prairie Dogs are really good at, digging holes. Prairie Dogs are incredibly important when it comes to maintaining prairies. They contribute to the lives of other mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects of the prairie, by providing habitat and food. Prairie dogs' churning activities aerate the soil to allow for more water penetration, while their nitrogen-rich dung improves the quality of the soil and surrounding vegetation. They also maintain prairies by removing invasive species.
