To be fair, BR in its final days was a very efficient railway in that Freight was breaking even, InterCity was in profit, NSE was also in profit and modernising, leaving Regional Railways the only real loss maker.
The WCML was TSR free (although with a line speed of 110), The ECML and Chiltern were upgraded on budget, and the rails and rolling stock (despite being very old in some cases) was in good condition. Then it got privatised and look what happened!
