What happened to Barry Atwater's face? The actor, who appeared as Surak on "Star Trek" and the vampire Janos Skorzeny in the TV movie "The Night Stalker," changed in appearance dramatically between 1965 and 1966, and his facial features continued transforming until his death in 1978. Some say it was the result of heavy steroid use early in his career, to add bulk to his tall frame. Others think it was a series of overdone nose jobs and face lifts. Maybe it was a combination of the two. Whatever the reason, the results are remarkable, and the once-handsome Atwater suddenly became more suited for sinister and grim roles. *** There was no accident, as far as anyone knows, so any plastic surgery he underwent was elective...but why did he do it? By 1965—having spent a few years as "G.B." Atwater—he was only in his late 40s, but his face was heavily lined, and his eyelids sagged. In 1966—at the exact point he changed back to "Barry"—his face was clearly smoother, but his ears were dragged downward in the process. His nose had been a little crooked, but the solution added so much to the bridge that his eyes looked even more sunken than his heavy brow had already made them appear. Plainly stated, why do the "before" and "after" photos look like they're in the wrong sequence? *** In 1968, Atwater's nose changed yet again; it became markedly smaller. Again, why did he do it? By the late 70s, just before he died, Atwater's face was pulled as tight as a wealthy dowager's. Was he addicted to plastic surgery? Or were these surgeries intended to correct the onset of steroid-induced acromegaly? We may never know. *** Whatever the causes, I've always been intrigued by the mystery, and with DVD screenshots and Photoshop now at hand, I thought I'd do a little analysis. This is the result. (It cycles through twice; there is no sound.) *** But one important note: Barry Atwater was a truly exceptional performer, and my interest in his work is wholly independent of my fascination with his appearance, which I believe only enhances his uniqueness. He should be remembered with affection and dignity, and I am celebrating how intriguing and completely memorable he was. Check out my other videos to see why.

  • @groovysherrie65 He took extremely high doses of steroids early in his career and is believed to have suffered from acromegaly, which is a pituitary condition that causes muscular and skeletal changes to the face, hands and feet in addition to lots of other nasty stuff. Atwater began resembling an ape in his middle yrs and and had extensive plastic surgery to hide the effects. He suffered from a number of other health problems as well. These photos show the overgrowth of his brow ridge
