hopefully you catch my drift. its kinda an old term that no one really uses or it is being forgotten since the annexation with ethiopia because the chira wata always leads in amharic music. therefore it is the masenqo. I know its complicated i used to be confused but its the old way of things. Im trying to share.

@syhaile Yes! i agree kirar is the more common term rather than masenqo. But what i am trying to tell you is that masenqo isn't necessarily an instrument in tigrinya but rather the instrument that would lead the habesha orchestra. do you catch my drift so even in tigrinya the masenqo can be a wata. its what ever leads the guayla. for example if you were to play Tsiray it would be the kirar leading so it would be the masenqo and if you were to play selam belulay the wata would be the masenqo

@freebusta123 "In eritrea they call the kirar the masenqo". I see your point, but Kirars are called Kirars is what I am trying to say. Maybe a Masenqo might be some underground slang that I do not know about. But the common term for the 6-string instrument is Kirar- not Masenqo

@syhaile Wikipedia is all good and what not. but that is history according to who? if you search up bahre negash on wiki it says it is ethio history when it bahre negash(negasi) is eritrean history. If you get a chance syhaile ask an elder or if you meet bereket mengsteab ask him what a masenqo is. He will tell you its the lead instrument(in the tigrinya language) . Don't go by the amharic meaning of words. its like konjo in tig and konjo in amh it has 2 dif meanings but they are similar.

."In eritrea they call the kirar the masenqo" That is the first time in my Life I ever heard of a Masenqo-- and I am Eritrean. But-Maybe you are also Eritrean-and probably no more. According to Wikipedia "The masenqo (also spelled masenko or masinqo) is a single-string violin"

@TubeExpression I think you need to learn about history. Maybe ask your grandfather what a masenqo is if you are not able to please learn to read tigrinya and read up howena.
and kirar is the Tigrinya word for lyre. and the begena is the tigrinya word for harp. As for Eritrean / Ethiopian civilization. it started in northern tigray and in akele Guzai in a region called ashimijana. Tigrinya is the language NOT ERITREAN. If you know any history we are all one.

@freebusta123 Masenqo is not an Eritrean word...educate urself and Krar is Eritrean for Harp. You gotta remember that Ethiopian civilization begins in Eritrea... so stop calling stuff Ethiopian.

@DEUTSCHLANDDUDE because its the same thing, Chira wata is what they call it in both countries. In eritrea they call the kirar the masenqo.. So it has to mostly with the lead instrument in the music thats the masenqo.
excellent and beautiful!!! it is not polluted by other instruments. please post some more.
and by the way, person should play and sing professionally if he is not already doing so.
