I think this may be the best movie of the decade. Truly. Incredible performances. Incredible cinematography. Incredible soundtrack. All around it's tops!

Yes. It was a penal colony - a way to get rid of the overpopulated prison hulks in the Thames. Consequently free settlement labour. Though 'The Proposition' is set sometime after they'd ceased transporting convicts entirely.
