A country singing legend speaks out about Taylor and Carrie - and it's not positive words of wisdom. Keep watching!

Wow, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood just got accused of stealing the identity of country music. I'm Dana Ward for Clevver TV with the story.

Yes, it is official and directly quoted from one of country music's famed performers. George Jones - who's been awarded several Grammy Awards, Country Music Awards and even got named as the genre's most promising new vocalist back in 1956 - recently said that Swift and Underwood have been using the popularity of country music to gain success, QUOTE "they've stolen our identity. They had to use something that was established already, and that's traditional country music."

Well, it is true that country music was well-established decades before Taylor and Carrie were even born, and it's definitely not the first time these two gals music styles have been questioned as being country... there's even more debate in the public eye as to if Swift's music classifies as country.

The definite country singing star, Jones, continued in his interview to say, QUOTE, "So what they need to do really, I think, is find their own title, because they're definitely not traditional country music."

Alright, so now I'm putting it out there for you guys. Try to be objective. Do you think the music of Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood classifies as true country style? Or maybe only one of them fit-in with the genre? And if you did have to pick a new title - as suggested by George Jones - what on earth would it be? Pop country or country pop or something altogether different? Weigh in on the situation right here or on our Twitter page @clevvertv.

Thanks so much for tuning into the show. I'm Dana Ward and we'll see ya soon! Hosted by Dana Ward.

  • Music changes with the times, guys. If Carrie Underwood is not country, neither is Lady A, Keith Urban, Taylor, Brad, Martina, Faith, Shania, Kenny, Miranda, etc.

It's called "country-pop". Welcome to the 21st century! Music is going to change 10 years from now, so it's not smart to say "Oh, let's stick to them good ole' country values."

All of these artists love and honor country music, and that is what really matters at the end of the day. To say otherwise is not true. Country is cool!

  • Listen to " MURDER ON MUSIC ROW " - by Alan Jackson and George Strait - that just about sums it all up about today's so called "Country Music "!

  • @carriefannn You're 100% right. Nobody you named is Country. And thats the problem, nobody calls them ( nor do they call themselves) "country-pop" (and it really ain't even that, its like fake southern drawl flavored pop). Irony is, no matter what you call it none of em (tho Martina & Carrie have some great pipes) are half as good of vocalists as the George's, Marty's, Faron's, Hank's, or Patsy's of yesteryear. And thats just a fact.

  • Who said they had to be "traditional" to be considered country? Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Shania Twain, and Jason Aldean are hardly traditional artistis either, but they're still winning CMA and ACM awards

  • I respect George Jones, but how incredibly rude of him! Times are changing, and his opinion is not final word. Taylor and Carrie, along with Miranda Lambert and Kellie Pickler, have introduced a new generation of young girls to the genre. No one is "stealing country music's identity". If anything, they've helped it.

  • @carriefannn I agree

  • If we stuck with traditional country music then country music wouldn't be like it is today, it wouldn't be a big as it is now. They are definitely country singers.

  • I think carrie underwood and taylor swift are totally country. love you carrie and taylor <3
