at first i thought you said DEC "Reimu" but i freaked out when i saw those insides! O_o they were supposed to be in a clean room but were left in something close to a garden shed!

These types of drives can be a nightmare to service if and when they do fail.

You should try to find an old NEC D2363 1GB SMD drive to connect to it.

Oh no toresbe - I DID check out the power and the logic before I applied power; at the very least the boards might be good for spares! And sure enough, it didn't break.
But there's so much crud and corrosion it's a mechanical write-off. I very nearly just pulled the boards and shoved it in the dumpster without even powering it up!

In a trailer - as in, a big trailer that would normally be hauled by a big truck. The guy used it for storage. Not snails, the nests or egg cases of some unidentified insect. Most of the 'mud' is similar organic detritus
