Were those ramps I saw in the arrays? If so, it's possible the stator transitions from one array to the next, bypassing the gate. Ramps would also change the gate from a horizontal distance between 1st & last magnets in the array to a vertical distance.

Don't know anything about this particular machine, just speculating a bit.
