Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups, the Garden Wall and the Anon, formed by students at the Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. They merged, with the result that 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford joined with 14-year-old Anthony Phillips, calling themselves the New Anon and recording a six-song demo featuring songs primarily written by Rutherford and Phillips.

At the top of the stairs he finds a chamber. It is almost a hemisphere with a great many doors all the way round its circumference. There is a large crowd, huddled in various groups. From the shouting, Rael learns that there are 32 doors, but only one that leads out. Their voices get louder and louder until Rael screams "Shut up!" There is a momentary silence and then Rael finds himself the focus as they direct their advice and commands to their new found recruit. Bred on trash, fed on ash the jigsaw master has got to move faster. Rael sees a quiet corner and rushes to it.

At the top of the stairs, there's hundreds of people,
running around to all the doors.
They try to find, find themselves an audience;
their deductions need applause.

The rich man stands in front of me,
The poor man behind my back.
They believe they can control the game,
but the juggler holds another pack.

I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.
I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.

I'd rather trust a countryman than a townman,
You can judge by his eyes, take a look if you can,
He'll smile through his guard,
Survival trains hard.
I'd rather trust a man who works with his hands,
He looks at you once, you know he understands,
Don't need any shield,
When you're out in the field.

But down here,
I'm so alone with my fear,
With everything that I hear.
And every single door, that I've walked through
Brings me back, back here again,
I've got to find my own way.

The priest and the magician,
Singing all the chants that they have ever heard;
and they're all calling out my name,
Even academics, searching printed word.

My father to the left of me,
My mother to the right,
Like everyone else they're pointing
But nowhere feels quite right.

And I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.
I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.

I'd rather trust a man who doesn't shout what he's found,
There's no need to sell if you're homeward bound.
If I choose a side,
He won't take me for a ride.

Back inside
This chamber of so many doors;
I've nowhere, nowhere to hide.
I'd give you all of my dreams, if you'd help me,
Find a door
That doesn't lead me back again
- take me away.

  • One of the very greatest albums ever and has a sound like no other.

  • I am 15. Discovered genesis in May. Changed my life forever. The unbelievable quality of the poetry is only equaled the beauty of the progressions. So epic I get shivers just listening to it. I wonder why intellectual music is not in greater circulation in my generation. These days if you ask a random high school jock he will have read the Lord of the Rings and think quantum physics is cool. But nobody has heard of this. Probably just because fashion dictates that we shouldn't.

  • @MangoPudding21 If you like the early Genesis, you may want to check out Marillion. When Genesis went pop in the 80's, Marillion filled the void with a few excellent albums (with Fish, and even without him). They sounded astonishingly similar. Almost as good as the real thing.

  • @THEPOCONOJOECHANNEL Lay Your Hands On Me has nothing in common with Genesis. Its a pure Gabriel Song... Brilliant, but doesn´t belong on this page...

  • @Happysundaze very true! I wonder why the only art form that somehow is not allowed any trace of sensationalism for fear of being called "pretentious" is music. critics are the real pretentious ego-freaks here. nobody complained when Tolkien deliberately made his stuff sound epic. in fact they loved him BECAUSE of it. why the hell should music be any different? Anyway most of us youth could play this stuff, but writing it would be a different matter entirely. hard to do indeed. :)

  • MangoPudding21 trust your instinctive good taste, I've been listening to this music for over years and stll love it. Art rock is unfashionable because it's not easy to do and critics have a hard time acknowledging anybody can be intellectually superior to them on stage.

  • @MangoPudding21 whoops. I meant to say how impatient not to be able to listen to five minutes

  • @breatjb but how impatient do you have to be to listen to five minutes of music when that introduction is five times as catchy as any Rihanna or stupid hip-hop and about a billion times as pleasing to the ear? (sigh...)

  • @MangoPudding21

    Totally agree with your comments, but, i´m 23, and still around my age the people seems dontá care much, or don´t get, it´s less of brains from them, they want gratification instantatly
