The 2008 race for the White House is over and its result carries historic significance. The 44th American President will be Democratic candidate Barack Obama, the first African-American leader in the history of the US. Considering the numerous challenges he will have to face, is there a chance that the change he promised will come into action? We discuss the issue with Boris Mamlyuk, regional field organiser of Barack Obamas presidential election campaign, and Robert Jellinek, Scholar, Fulbright programme.

  • I'm sure Russia is happy with Obama! I couldn't believe when McCain said that day "We are all Georgians". WTF? Anyway, GoBama!

  • only because of Russias freezing cold winters and then the melting of the ice which leads to basically one huge mud puddle so enemies can't move troops or supplies and just gives up

  • Actually my feeling is that Russian as a majority like wars, sorry if I generalize. I am looking at your news, everyday you need to have news about new great weapon, one day is a new tank, another is a new ship next day a new missile. That should be a popular demand. Same for Russian when they have no arguments they argue that Russia can blow all world few times. I would prefer if you can be proud of something else :-) I would be happy.

  • no I hate wars, this is why I am afraid of what Russian rulers are preparing for us (as a world. Strong US with good relation in many parts of the world means that your Russian rulers would think several times before engaging in any stupid action i.e. against Ukraine. They would face condemnation of united world. Under Bush who was in conflic with everyone there was no way to unite world for a good cause. Hopefully now it is going to be easier under popular Obama

  • You like wars I see it in you every comment.

  • dreamer, dreamer, look around. forget russia, look at china. US is at mercy of chineese. look at s. america (brezil, venezuela, etc), they do not want too blindly follow you and you can do nothing about that. and you will not be capable of doing something in the visible future. times changed. if obama does not understand that too bad for all and for US first.

  • you better pray he will be capable of pulling US from the deep shit hole it got concistently in. it's too early to dream, buddy.

  • Hm, if you're talking about mob backing, perhaps you should check out McCain/Palin rallies. And if you're talking about being in the back pockets of special interests, check out the ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

And what's so unclear to you about change Obama is bringing? It's his whole approach to diplomacy that's gonna be different. No unprovoked wars, talk with our adversaries, live up to our agreements (in the sphere of environment, non-proliferation, UN mandates). Change enough for ya?

  • yes Obama has quite harsh rhetoric toward Russia, this is why I am quite surprise lot of Russian like him.I think US will get back his leading role in the world. A small countries, with gdp of 2-3% of world one, would have to forget dreams about becoming a superpower. That was possible only in the era of weak president like Bush.

  • why ? Obama is a nightmare for KGB or whatever it is called now. Once again a powerful and popular US president. Bye bye Russian dreams of superpower ...

  • he has harsh enough rhetoric to Russia. still, his real attitude would be clearer later.
