Once I buckled down m budget, I was able to pay down my student loan in 6 months!
Now I am working to have my CC paid off by the end of the year and I'll be debt free.
It just takes disciple and realizing that you don't have to charge up everything. It doesn't hurt to wait a few weeks to save up for an item that you probably don't need anyway.
Im 19 and i already try to manage my money. It might not be big to others but i just recently bout myself my first pair of Jordans and i don't plan on buying another pair for a long time. And its sad to say that i have more money in the bank then people twice my age. Im a full time college student and i work. I know i have a long road ahead of me, so i wanna start saving money and spending my money the right way now. So in the near future i don't buy stuff i don't need.
I also think a lot of us (black folks) were raised with the "rob Peter to pay Paul" mentality. Especially if we came from a sigle parent households. Many of us were not taught about saving or being careful with spending becuz our parent didnt teach us and their parents didnt teach them etc. Plus our parent(s) were too busy trying to raise us and survive. But its like my grandmom says "When you know better u do better."
I think learning to spend wisely comes with age and experience for a lot of us. I work w/ a lady now who in her 20's purchsed a Benz (she still has and its not paid for yet), and went way over board with the private student loans (she wasnt worried about paying back) and she likes all things name brand. Now in her 30's she has filed backruptcy and realizes the mistakes of trying to keep a life style she could not afford. Sadly she had to figure this out the hard way.
oh yeah i've seen that I only have 1 designer bag that i got cheap off my friend sure i want another one but i can't afford it i dont charge anything.
I love your hair! this makes me feel so much better about my spending!! I feel guilty after spending $60/day on crap, but I would strangle myself for making a habit out of buying dumb stuff. yes, I have lots of designer things, but they are classic pieces. I splurge once a year, if that. and it's never full price!
I live with someone like this. I evaluate my finances TOO much. This chick will spend $600 within an hour. I can't do that. I have a business trip coming this week, so instead of hitting the club, knowing I would have to buy an outfit and shoes, etc. I decided to stay home, I'd rather have food to eat, than spend it on an outfit, I'll wear once. Smh
I really needed to hear this right now, I am so upside down in my car loan and Im trying to make the decision whether I should buy a cheeper car so i can survive and ruin my credit or just keep being late on the rent because the car has to be paid weekly and its the same amount as the rent..girl so much drama and i dont eve like my current car..uhhh
I can definitely relate. I made two purchases recently that have me scratching my head every time I walk past it. First was a designer hand bag (for a substantial amount of $) and the other designer shoes because I fell victim to the "I deserve it" itis. LOL I have since set both items on a display case and made a sign underneath that reads "Life's Regrets" Great video.
