How to use chemistry to put silver on glass. It uses the reduction of silver ions in solution and the oxidation of an aldehyde to a carboxylic acid. Lots of ammonia is needed to keep the silver dissolved at the basic pH needed to drive the aldehyde reaction.
Paint stripper was used to remove the old paint and nitric acid was used to strip the old silver off the mirror.
The sand/plastic bag was used because this is the most economical disposable container we could think of.
