It was built completely from bar stock in my basement hobby machine shop. The plans by Dr. J.R. Senft are from the November 1980 issue of Live Steam magazine.

It's basically an atmospheric engine.
As the piston draws back a reed valve on the front of the cylinder opens and the heat of the flame is drawn in. Near the bottom of the stroke the valve closes and the trapped air cools quickly enough to create a vacuum that draws the piston forward. The forward stroke is the power stroke. So it is actually the ambient atmospheric pressure that allows it to run.
