The stiff leg deadlift is my favorite hamstring exercises because it works the hams through a full range of motion. You can go fairly heavy with this exercise. The key is to really emphasis the stretch in the bottom portion of the lift. To do this I like to stand on a step or a box to allow for a deeper range of motion.

  • lee big help if you answer this i have not had a injury for a while and the pain i had last week has gone from the hamstrings. i did stiff legged dead lifts for the 2nd time and i trained each muscle like i always do start light add weight each set to warm up and on working sets i went to failure untill i could do no more with my lower back. but it was to much for my hamstrings any tips. cause this is a stretching exercise its different from working the muscle to failure with say ham curls.

You don't need to train to failure. It's ok to stop short of failure and just work the muscle and build up gradually over time. In fact I rarely rep out to failure. I usually stop with a couple reps left in the tank. This allows you to train more consistently and with less risk of injury.

  • @leemhayward thanks so how do i no when my hamstrings have been worked enough. i found i could keep going with the stiff legged dead lifts untill my back fatigued. and that was to much for my hamstrings. i dont wonna go over the top again. ok m8 i will not rep out to failure how will i no when the hamstrings have been worked fully? i no when its hamstring curls. but the stretching exercise stiff legged dead lifts i done to much last week. the pains gone now though

You just have to listen to your body to know what's enough or what's too much. This comes from experience. The more you do the exercise the more you'll be able to target the focus to the desired muscle groups.

  • so to make a stiff leg dl it has to be done on a step up

  • @MrRossboss2010

No, you can still do them off the floor. But the step provides a deeper stretch and better range of motion.

  • californication!

  • @barbievalentino imagine touching your toes..now if you were to imagine that with 135 in your hands your ROM would be restricted because the plates would hit the floor because you would reach your toes. That little step allows the weights to go deeper allowing a deeper ROM. the contraction is when you are pulling the weight back up. Going down stretches the muscle and it contracts as you bring the barbell back up
