It all started with Buddy Mathew's comic strip Vic & Natalie about a couple in Chalmette Louisiana...then the Big Easy came out and Dennis Quad used it. So then the tourist come down and they expect people to say "Nawlins" and god forbid some gave them what they wanted...also there are so many Nawlins wannabees! I'm a professional musician born in the 9th ward and I hear it all the time "I'm from Nawlins too!" Really what part? Here are some of the answers.."Kenner" "Shreveport" "Meterie"

@HOLYJEEBUSS  Told Dennis Quad when he was filming The Big Sleezy the same thing. Buddy Mathew's made Nawlins popular with Vic & Natlee but that's a different parish and together...

We actually prounouce Burgundy Street as bur-GUN-dee, not the traditional BUR-gundee (unlike how Tom Waits sings it in this song.) But no one down here says Nawlins. I've only ever heard out-of-towners say Nawlins. And the only time you'll hear it pronouces "Orleeens" is if you're reffering to Orleans Parish.Other than that the majority of people down here say New Orleans.

@turbogrammy When I went to New Orleans last, I must have heard the locals pronounce the name of the city about six different ways. Being from Seattle, a city where the locals have virtually no accent, I though this was awesome. Pretty sure I did hear one woman say Nawlin's, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

I squatted in an empty preschool by the oliver train yard in the 9th for a month. there was 22 of us and 10 dogs. Loved it. best times of my life. we'd get drunk and sing Tom Waits songs.
