But then when I saw he was seriously going to try to split it, I pulled the plywood out and warned him that it was a lot stronger than what he was used to breaking. He refused to listen and had others set the board back in place. He broke his hand fairly bad. That was in my high school electronics class a long time ago.

I had a Taiwanese friend that did a very similar thing. He was bragging about how he was a high-ranking belt in the martial arts and how he could split several inches of wood with his bare hands. I tried to explain to them that was a confidence builder and the wood was typically cut cross grain so it would split easier. I put a piece of plywood between a table and a chair as a joke.
