We found this Skycrane firefighting helicopter filling up with water for a fire a few miles away. We were about 200 feet away from it as it hovered over the river... close enough to get sprayed by the water it kicked up... it also threw up a lot of debris as it flew off!
Erickson Aircrane S-64F rated to carry 25,000 lbs. (12.5 tons) external load.
That's 2650 gallons or about 11 tons of water it just siphoned up in the time you watched it hovering.

i wonder (as i live in nyc) whether this particular type of helicopter could be adapted to work in conjunction with a fireboat which would cruise around manhattan island with the helo on a pad atop the fireboat and in the event of a highrise fire close in to the shorline of the island whether the helo couldnt carry a hose and water cannon deployed from the boat and that the issue of pumping the water to the required height couldnt be overcome by pump mechanisms on both the helo and the boat ?

not the most beautiful thing, but as long as it does the job, it's great! :)

There is a meter in the cockpit, not unlike a gas meter in a car that shows how full the tank is. The ones I've seen have digital displays as opposed to a needle gauge.
