Playwright Tony Kushner On CUNY Controversy, Academic Freedom, Views on Israel & New Play. 1 of 2

In a global broadcast exclusive, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner appears on Democracy Now! to respond to the May 9 vote by the City University of New York to award him an honorary degree, reversing its previous vote. CUNY's board of trustees had come under widespread criticism since voting to shelve the honor last week after one member cited Kushner's critical views of Israeli government policies. Kushner describes his views on Israel and talks about his new play, "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scripture." It has just opened at the Public Theater in New York City.

the fact that this ever happened should ring alarm bells for anyone who doubts the nefarious presence of the israeli "lobby". this is a repeat of the norman finkelstein tenure and alan dershowitz plagiarism controversies.

There needs to be understood the fact that criticism of Israeli policy does not translate as a vendetta against the Jewish people. Curtailing academic freedom has become a major problem in this country that people like Wisenfeld et al preempt anyone who speaks a word of support for the Palestinians "before any problems arise". Luckily for Tony Kushner, those who believe in justice spoke out against Wisenfeld who beleives the Palestinian people are "not human." Let's all read Tony Kushner!

Wiesenfeld comes across as a creepy fascist drone. If he were a German in 1936 Germany he would deny Kushner the award with a speech where he would condemn "anyone who spreads such vicious lies about our heroic fatherland and our moral, inspiring Fuhrer."
