OK my mistake, six of the seven tunnels were used for a smaller-gauge rail line operated by the mine. The biggest tunnel was the only one used by the TAG.
This is one of seven abandoned former Tennessee-Alabama-Georgia (TAG) Railroad tunnels that cut through Pigeon Mountain. They were built in 1890 and were abandoned after TAG sold out to Norfolk Southern in 1971. The rail line that goes past Dow-Rechhold and stops at the old Barwick mill used to go through these tunnels and then on to Menlo and down to Gadsden Alabama. They're now located within the Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Preserve.
I haven't seen them myself, but I hear they are old mining tunnels located off Estelle Mines Road ,which is off of US 193 on the North/NW side of the mountain. I'm just discovering this gem of a mountain and would love to be able to talk with someone who knows the area.
Did the horses make it without injury?
