From the Dangriga airport we drove a lot. The streets in Belize are populated by speed bumps. Not so much populated by tarmac, if you get my drift. The second highest death rate is do to car accidents. We saw one on the way back from one of our excursions. Another group saw one too, and it was apparently pretty grizzly.

Driving through the Belize countryside we truly saw how the other half lives. Most are farming communities. If you don't own one, you work for one. Belize's biggest crops are Bananas, Oranges, Almonds... and some other nuts. Most of the houses are on stilts (foreshadowing).

We turned down a very long road towards the small town of Hopkins. The road hasn't been paved in decades. Strangely enough the drivers in Belize find that it must work better on the shocks of the car to drive on the UNPAVED parts of the road.

I asked, and it was confirmed, that this was the only road in or out of the area we were headed. If we watching a movie, the abundant amount of foreshadowing at this point would've been pretty obvious.

After driving through Hopkins, we finally came to our destination: Jaguar Reef Lodge.

  • Did you stay at Jaguar Reef, or Almond Beach at Jaguar Reef?

  • @plhavok: Check out my Day Five videos.

  • Did you see the Mayan pyramids? How far is it from this place? I plan my honeymoon there next year but want to definitely see the pyramids.

  • im leaving tommorrow to go there & im wondering, wer u staying in a cabana or the hotel

  • wow yeah we were there for all of that too, but we weren't stuck anywhere. We were usually just a day out from not being able to pass the bridges, so I guess we got lucky.

  • Thats good. We got hit pretty hard. The next 2 videos in the series are our last 2 days, showing all the damage & flooding. You can C some of it in the 1st video Belize Honeymoon Trailer. All incoming & outgoing flights were canceled; no power for 3 days. U couldnt get out by land even if U wanted 2 Bcause the Sittee River overflowed, washing out many of the bridges. They eventually evacuated us by boat. If ever there was a moment when I truly thought I was going 2 die, it was then. : /

  • We left home on the 9th of October and got back on the 27th of October. Yeah we did but it was fun haha nothing bad happened but there was lots of rain which meant flooding inland.
