Three years of practice helps. I tend to scour the level for health even if I don't need it, because I'm obsessive-compulsive in that respect... 0_o

how in the heck do you up to the beam like what buttons do you press?

You press the jump button. Usually it's the triangle button, but check in the options menu just to be sure
(this is for PS2).
