In my humble opinion only, I always thought the cake was a metaphor for a relationship. Cakes have "layers" to them similar to the complexity of a relationship. That's why she refers to, "never having the recipe again." Each relationship/cake is unique/ has it's own recipe. "Someone left the cake out in the rain," means neither her nor her lover knows who started the "spoiling" of their relationship. Since leaving a cake in the rain will cause it to melt or spoil.

This is exactly the view i've always had of the song as well....I love songs like this that use metaphors instead of coming right out with it using crass words/lyrics....a metaphor can just as well get the point across...and sound wonderfully too as this classic song proves.....RIP Ms. Summer....We all miss you. :)

GurlPrincess.....YOU ARE INDEED CORRECT...THIS ENTIRE PERFORMANCE IS A LESSON IN OUTSTANDING METORPHORICAL EXPRESSIONS....WHEN DONNA SINGS LATER IN THE SONG SHE EVEN "GESTURES'" TO HER HEART WHEN USING THE LYRICS "My cake out in the rain"......A PLEASURE TO SEE THERE IS SOMEONE OUT "THERE" who understands this Song that has such well "Carved" lyrics.....JIMMY OF AMERICAN IDOL SHOULD BE INFORMED....he doesn't "GET IT".......friendfromyesteryear....

Looking back I'm glad a friend of mine took me to see her back in 2007 at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, something I wouldn't have done on my own.
