Me playing Gong Yi's composition, Chun Feng 《春風》 ("spring breeze") on the guqin. I made a few mistakes, but I often get nervous when I record myself playing!

NB 2009: I have come to the conclusion that this piece is an abomination in itself in that probably only GY can play it 'correctly' and no one on the face of this planet which is sort of 'elitist' in a way. Really, Master Gong, what were you thinking when you composed it?!

Note that I don't know how to play this piece anymore and I will not 'contaminate' my qin with such music ever again!

  • Charlie, I would love to hear you play this piece again. I will even dare you to make you do that. Go ahead! I think you will do just fine. After all, I don't give a damn is this is a traditional piece or communist piece or what, spring breeze is one of the very best piece of music ever composed on the qin. And absolutely more and more new piece that will reflect today's modern global culture will be born and I can't wait!

  • @KangSangCheung Well, I don't like this piece anymore really so I'm afraid you won't get your wish. I'm currently in a lul at the moment when it comes to qin playing as I have been busy with other things and if I needed to learn a major piece it would be one of the traditional ones; these modern ones are too hard to learn over a week when I could do so for a traditional one.

  • Strange that interpretation of the old repertoire is highly praised but any different on modern pieces are cosidered 'incorrect'... Does that mean that this piece composed by GY will not enter the same league as ancient pieces?

After pondering for several years since I played this, no, it won't.

  • Believe me, it's not just interpretation, for example what the hell was 3:05?? Gong Yi has nothing to do with your inability to follow tablature.

  • I'm not saying that my playing here is *not* a failure. It most definately is a failure! But please, give me a break! This was several years ago when I was still in my experimental stages and I've grown up since then to get away from such a farce. It is here as a personal record. And one hardly thinks it gentlemanly or appropriate to scrutinise others when one has not been subjected to scrutiny of others themselves by showing there own capabilities as evidence of their critical abilities...

  • CharlieHuang you are awesome !! don't listen to these fools,to learn is to practice,to practice is to perfect,to perfect is to find that heightened level in oneself that very few achieve ,,,

  • Nice :)

  • Let's see your videos, weitianjie2000. Oh wait, you don't have any.....

  • Man that jan guy is a dick

  • don't be so uptight. seriously.

charlie, don't down yourself for playing this. Yahweh has gifted you and put a unique song inside of you that only you can play, and if it means that your interpretation of a song that someone else wrote is different then so be it. i think it's a beautiful piece and you shouldn't condemn yourself for not being able to play it the way the composer intended. he is, after all, just a man, of no more value than you or me.

  • I am very new to this instrument and I respect the long traditions and would very much like to learn how to play in the traditional style.

That said, as a musician I must note that without evolution, no form of music would ever have evolved. Traditional pieces and playing styles should be respected but at the same time one shouldn't get upset when an instrument is played in a new or different way. That is as much of an insult to the art of music as failing to acknowledge classical ways.
