See my whole video / blog collection on the above link. This video was made shortly after arriving home from my hospital stay after open heart surgery to fix my severely leaking mitral valve.

  • Just found out I need a valve replaced. There is a new procedure where they enter through the side and do not have to separate the sternum. I am hoping I can have it done this way

  • That is an option in some cases, and I wanted it too for a while, but it depends on your valve and exactly what type of repair you need, it might not be possible. It is less invasive and less chance of infection and a smaller scar, but apparantly the pain is similar / even worse as it cuts through the muscle, wheras with the sternum it is just skin and bone... Also if it is complicated then you will probably have a better chance of success with regular open heart as the surgeon has ...

  • .. has more room to see and move - especially if it is more complicated than just routine..

visit valvereplacement com - they will answer all your questions, its a great forum and you will learn a lot about the different options available.

  • hi, HVSJDan, hope ur in good health. Great that i stumbled across your blog, they been so helpful. I found out 2day my friend is having bypass surgery next week. He had heart problems last summer and after sum tests he's being called in. I'm petrified to for him but watching your videos has helped me cope. Hopefully his op will be a success and have a quick recovery.

  • @Spongebob19801 lol, thanks, good to know :)

  • I too had open heart surgery it was in 03. I am 45 years old and doing just fine. I was scared at first but I wanted to live, so I had the surgery. If you or someone you know need to have this operation don't worry you will be fine.

  • I have been told that I need my valve repairing. I too had an op when I was 4, I am 28 now. just finished watching your blog. I think it is brilliant! I like it because its very honest, not looking forward to the chest tubes being pulled out!! No pain no gain as they say!! Like the bit about the fit nurses! As a single guy im hoping to have a few nice ones looking after us!! haha!! Glad to hear everything has been a success!! Thanks once again for the insight. Craig
