WVSP Senior Trooper J.M. Comer discusses the investigation into the shooting of Glasgow Officer Steve Smith. Troopers said Nickey Don Smith called police to his Glass Fire Lane home the night of Dec. 13 to report a burglary, however when the police arrived he fired at them with a sawed off shotgun. Officer Smith, who was off duty and out of uniform, was struck in the chest. He was not wearing a bulletproof vest but is expected to survive. Nickey Smith was arrested and charged with malicious assault of a police officer and a federal charge of felon is possession of a firearm.
Sounds like a case of misidentification and a poor judgement call on both parties. I have a question for the two officers that responded to the call. Why did the officer in uniform go to the backdoor while the unmarked officer knocked on the door?

The man (Nickey Don Smith II) is my father and the police officer was in plain clothing when arrived at his residence responding to a burglary call. Now why would any officer respond to such an urgent frantic 911 call in plain clothing? Number 1 if you know that he has a long and extensive background history, why would you knock on the door in plain clothing with your firearm drawn?
