The Eleven, by the Grateful Dead, from the album Live/Dead

A pretty funky song, played in 11/8 time signature.

edit: apologies for the pic disappearing after a few seconds... created the vid hastily while somewhat 'mentally intoxicated'.

  • phenomenal bass playing from Phil Lesh... THE best bass player in rock

  • They and the Byrds were listening to a lotta John Coltrane, Charles Parker, Miles Davis and mixing ir with the crazy tsake on blues and folk and country and rock and off and on and on here we go....

  • best big band tune ever recorded

  • ASTONISHING guitar work. Only Jerry has this quirkiness and whimsical charm in his playing. Insane fluidity in this time signature. So catchy, this album got me into the Dead and Jerry's playing. Thank God!

    (Crazy good bass playing too)

  • I must say I haven't heard this in about 30 years but I still remember 99 per cent of the licks. I listened to this album ( no joke ) at least 5 times a day the first year it came out and if remains THE number one album of theirs ( anthem #2 ) Thanks for the posting

  • I simply cannot escape the inconceivably tenatious gravitational pull of the "Phil Zone" presented here!

  • can i have a version of this in like 1990....?

  • Of course there are no dislikes! It's impossible to NOT like the Grateful Dead!

  • I really dig Jerry's Guitar work on this.

  • Awesome album. My friends and I would play this over and over aougain. Nothing compares to "live" GD. Some of the best experiences of my life. Thaks guys. I can imagine Jer still rockin out like this is up in the clouds now.
