http://chess.geniusprophecy.com/ This is an introduction to a chess opening known as the Ruy Lopez or Spanish Opening, the backbone of the repertoires of many world champions such as Garry Kasparov and Robert James "Bobby" Fischer.

In the video, I forgot to mention that the Berlin Defence (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.0-0 Nxe4) has some very strong devotees. 14th Undisputed World Champion Vladimir Kramnik famously used this as a surprise weapon against Kasparov, allowing him to win the PCA World Chess Championship from him. More recent devotees of the defence include Topalov, Alekseev, Aronian and Wang Yue.

  • 1:39 Isn't it better for blacks to take the pawn (exd4 Nxd4. Then black white will no longer have any pawn on the d and e files) instead of retreating the knight?

And why is it better to take the white bishop (2:47) with the d pawn and not the b pawn? (for me, taking with the b pawn opens a file for the rook and grants a better center control).

  • 1. After ...exd4, Black has problems on the e-file after White plays Re1 followed by Nxd4.

    2. Taking with the b-pawn is possible, but most players consider it to be too structurally weakening. In addition, Black is behind in development whereas White can castle immediately. ...dxc6 occurs 98.55% of the time in modern practice.
