@kungfucritic its partly true. this is derived from the long arm/ short arm drills we have in ngor chor. it is to practive the four principles of swallow spit float and sink. we do not break the bridge but aim to practice controlling an opponent. it is like push hands but your arm movements are limited. push hands but with your arms straight
ACtually in push hands it is very easy to neutralise a kick as contact is established and you are listening with your hands. So no offense lookyeahhohon but i agree you dont understand. However this is more of a friendly bridge arm challenge no real fighting or free style al oput push hands. Respect.
push hands is not very practical in real combat, but it lays the foundation for balancing the body and learning to adapt to someone else's force. I used to practice push hands as a kid in kung fu, and now i use it in judo all the time
Watch carefully and you will notice the guy playing his arms at different range. The bigger guy does not realise it but his arms are being pulled out thus weakening his power while the other guys arms are drawn in closer to facilitate his own strength. Quite funny to watch as the bigger guy is totally oblivious to this this as he is so busy exerting strength to even notice. Notice you even see the smaller guy standing right behind his arm to add weight to his arm.
Actually the title is misleading. Its actually a drill in bridge control. The goal is to break the opponents bridge arm by bringing his own arm across and finally finishing in the press position. This demonstrate its not all about muscles !
i dont understand why the challenger had to focus on his hands while the master's lower torso is wide open for being attacted by a kick. the challenger was not using every weapon he got...what about a headbutt!! in a real combat, you got to use every part of your body... this video is only for the masters to make a point.

Because it's just an excercise not a fight. "Combat" challenge is pretty misleading, but hey, it's still pretty cool for what it is.

When proper energy is applied to the bridge it is not possible to kick hence the whole point of the exercise.

It's a training exercise. Jap Leong's partner probably knows that if he tried to kick or headbutt him he (the partner) would end up on the floor.
