I rarely find problems with the embouchure. That might sound strange because people come to see me because of problems with their embouchure, but frequently it is the embouchure reacting to a bad set of circumstances and failing - it is simply cause and effect.

  • @MoccasinBrass don't say things that harsh! You don't know the guy. to explain it's better to say everything you say is bound to interpretation of both speaker ánd listener. If anyone has experience with wrong interpretation of what people have to say, then it would be me. So I always reconsider what people have to say, especially people as arnold jacobs. He does an amazing job, so what do I not understand that it doesn't help me?

  • Wilktone, You have a very fragmented and incorrect view of the theories you are questioning, perhaps you should take some lessons with those that have carried on Jacobs' work before you push your own theories here.

  • @wilktone I would agree that his theories are not entirely accurate. Anyone who has read David Vining's works might find some of what Jacobs says to be contrary, especially regarding conceptions about the body. However, conception of an idea is completely based on an individual's interpretation. For this reason, Jacob's ideas on the development of the embouchure work for some, but certainly not all.

  • I just spent a half hour about Jake and pushed the wrong button. I am amazed that there are people out there that just don't understand his message, come for a lesson.

  • "The embouchure is easy to work with and easy to control." Really? I know a lot of brass players who would disagree. Jacobs also admits, "I hardly ever consider the embouchure." You won't find what you don't look for.

Please don't misunderstand me, Jacobs was a remarkable pedagogue. He just had some inaccurate theories about embouchure, yet we tend to not question his ideas here because of the respect we have for his work on breathing and musical communication.
