Open fireplace burning WV coal. This fire was stoked shortly before filming so the orange flames are tipping more than typically desired. An efficiently burning coal fire burns with a predominately blue flame and virtually no smoke. Victorian coal baskets were designed to promote proper airflow to allow the coal to burn with little maintenance. This unit is used for heating. Notice the full glowing bed. The radiant heat it produces is projected to the front and actually warms the things in the room instead of the air. The flue or chimney temperature is generally a lot lower than a wood fire. This means less draft is generated, reducing heat loss from an open fireplace.
I wish I could get coal here in Nebraska. I placed an ad saying that I would come clean out any old coal rooms that were in use around here up until about 40 years ago... I got one lady who responded. The coal was outdoors in a big open bin. Unfortunately - most of the coal was exposed to 40 years of weather. (hail, freezing water, etc...) The coal was at best gravel sized... a handful of larger pieces but that was all. I couldn't even keep it lit. So, I still cut firewood. hehehe

You can burn larger bits, nothing bigger than the size of your fist.

Just bought some bituminous coal. I might have to divide some of the bigger bits, what's the recommended size for an open fireplace?
