The song is about Lou Reed's experiences with some of the Warhol Superstars at Warhol's Factory. Many of these "superstars" were transsexual, transvestite, and homosexual "misfits" who appeared at Warhol's many social functions. The song is about how, after the weekend, these people became mere "clowns" in the eyes of the public, that mocked and ridiculed these people at the time. BTW, they could only afford "rags" and "hand me downs" to wear to these A list gatherings
Imo, the song was about a girl trying on costumes to try to invent herself & crashing. The video is utterly literal; I agree, but it got the jist of the song. Not as darkly sinister, no, probably not, but from something done as a portrait and maybe as a lark it's nice enough.
Actually, I have to confess that I like the original non-Nico takes with Lou Reed sounding more like Dylan than the dirge of Nico's voice, ymmv, but I thought it was a nice change from setting it to a tv show or something.
haha, ur totallity right! i bet if it was an ugly overweight chick EVERYBODY would be trashing on it! this belongs on MTV somewhere, with all their other crap
no i think ya missed the point. Any song means so many differnt things 2 different people. Dont analyse jst njoy and i think this works. goin out aint all a bundle a laffs its a journey. anyway i gona shut up coz i analysin now lmao
Not to nitpick, but this video does not, as patchwork7 says, capture the emotional feel of the song AT ALL. It is a video of a pretty girl walking, crying, and trying on clothes. This is literal to the point of being reductive. To say this "captures the emotional feel" of the song is totally inaccurate because the song is deathly dark and slyly funny and campy and maintains a sinister quality forty years later and the video is kind of like "The Hills."
