Such tactics have no place in a democracy. Yet Kozinski, Matz, and the L.A.P.D. has yet to condemn them. And by this silence, they signal tacit approval and encourage further abuses.

Kozinski said the reason for allowing the cameras was to help the public "develop enhanced confidence in the rule of law." Having confidence in the rule of law presupposed an impartial judge. As one observant blogger put it, "Judge..., it's having a very different effect than you evidently imagine."
