This exercise will help any guitar player wanting to play outside in a jazz fusion improvisation in the style of fusion players such as Guthrie Govan or Greg Howe.

The idea is to mentally prepare every note you play by visualizing the fretboard before hitting the notes.

  • I sound like shit when I do it. Thank you for this lesson though.

I am wondering if there are any rules like never start slipping on the ONE beat or never resolve on the TWO...etc... ?

  • @highintel The biggest thing is rhythm. Having a strong rhythm motif will help. You should come to my Rhythm Phrasing Masterclass on the 28th. See guitarplayback(dot)com for more info...

  • Happy birthday, brother! You're such an inspiration!

  • @LydianHarmony Thank you so much!!!

  • Mr. Walliman. Hi. As someone that is setting goals to become a better sight reader and modal player in a jazz / fusion context, how soon should I start thinking about jamming with other musicians in the same style? Should I feel "ready" to jam with experienced players, or just start by going all in with players on my rudimentary level? Thank you.

  • @itowedin I would recommend playing with anyone you can. I don't think you'll ever feel ready though, I sure don't! :-/

  • @merseyguy1974 the idea of playing outside isnt really to play a random note, but rather play in a specific rhythm like a drummer would do.

  • Great concept exercise!
