A total of 255 players were picked in the 2010 NFL draft and 27 of them were wide receivers. Not one of them was named Victor Cruz.
He never received the phone call that all players dream about getting during the draft.
As soon as the draft is over, it becomes a free-for-all with the 32 teams immediately scrambling to sign the best of the rest. That's when Cruz's phone started ringing.
The Panthers called. They didn't offer a contract. Just a tryout.
The Redskins called. They didn't offer a contract. Just a tryout.
The Giants called. They didn't offer a tryout. Just a three-year contract.
"Thirty minutes after the draft, I knew where I was going," Cruz said. "Right after the Giants called me, I was ready to go."
Now, there are a bunch of teams that must be wondering why they didn't invest even a seventh-round pick on Cruz, the wide receiver from UMass. "I guess, judging from what I've done this year, I would have to say yes," Cruz said.
There was near hysteria in Giants training camp this summer when Steve Smith signed with the Eagles, even though the serious knee injury he suffered near the end of the 2010 season made him iffy at best to be productive this season. As it turned out, he caught only 11 passes for the Eagles and finished the season on injured reserve.
Who was going to be in the slot for the Giants? Who would make all those third-down catches? Cruz, who was in line for the job, caught the Giants' attention when he grabbed three touchdowns against the Jets in the first preseason game of 2010. He made the team out of training camp, but wound up spending most of the season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
He has blossomed into more than a third receiver or slot receiver. He's become a star.
