The Life Tree
(Based on a poem by Abdul Kalam)
Mrinalini Sarabhai
How were we born
Into infinity
In the universe
Oh humanity
Are we alone?
Seeking an answer
To this great creation
Weighs heavily upon my mind
For around the sun
In my seventieth orbit
The sun will shine again
Upon my race
Seeking an answer
I seek the creator.
The eventful day
The earth below I flew
Humanity vanished in
The white river of clouds
Only the divine splendour
Silent and free pervades.
Above the full magnificent moon
Melted my heart
O Vidyasagar look the
Splendour enters our soul
Happiness blossoms within
All humanity bows to the divine
Listen 'We are not alone
The divine message resounds
Billions, billions of lives
Varied the forms springing
In the planets
Galaxy after galaxies
Wondrous on that full moon night
Echoed the Creator's message
'You the human race the finest
of all creation, live, live, live!'
Give till your togetherness
In happiness and pain
United you shall live
My bliss will be born
Love is continuum.
That the mission of humanity
The life's tree will blossom
O greatest of creations
Learn, learn and live.
Echoes through the universe
Flowers blossom beauty fragrance
Yet blooms fall silently
Unite once more with Mother Earth
Learn to live and bond
The human life
For you are the tree of
All existence
Blessings to you
Sing together loud and clear
This, the Song of Creation
