Time-lapse of Carey Beebe carving a key of a new unfretted clavichord.
After marking out with pencil, the end limit of the straight carving is cut vertically with the knife. The carving is commenced on all four faces up to this limit. A small spokeshave is then used to carve each side to the pencil lines. The two carved surfaces are flattened by scraping and the key is burnished with fine steel wool. Finally, the ski-tip terminations are scalloped from the top surface of the key.
Unfretted Clavichord after J.C. Gerlach, Carey Beebe Sydney 2008, private commission under construction for a Sydney musician.
