Kings & Queens of England Part 3 of 9: Henry III.
****** This presentation is part of a school project carried out by French students ******
My name is Henry III Plantagenet and I was born on October 1st 1207 at Winchester
Castle. I'm the oldest son of King John Lackland and Isabella of Angoulême. I became king
when I was 9 years old after my father's death on October 19th 1216.
In 1236, I married Eleanor of Provence, and my wife gave me several children
but only five survived:
-Edward I who became the new king.
-Margaret who married Alexander III, King of Scotland in 1251.
-Beatrice who married John II, Duke of Brittany.
-Edmund of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster, who married Blanche d'Artois in 1276.
And finally Katherine
The English barons, unhappy with my father, offered the throne to Prince Louis, son of Philip Augustus,
who had crossed the channel and I was crowned in London. After King John's death, their bitterness
faded and they abandoned the party of Louis to join me.
My indifference to tradition and lack of effective ruling ability resulted in the barons forcing me to agree to a series of reforms known as the Provisions of Oxford. Later, when I refused to implement the provisions, a revolt resulted and I was captured by Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Lewes. I was restored to the throne when Montfort was defeated by my son Edward at the Battle of Evesham over a year later.
I built a Royal Palace in the town of Cippenham, Slough, Buckinghamshire named «Cippenham Moat».
I died in London on November 16th, 1272. My body was laid, temporarily, in the tomb of Edward the confessor while my sarcophagus was constructed in Westminster Abbey.
My reign was continuously submissive to those revoltees and my authority widely mocked.
God save Henry III.
