Welcome! This is an overview of The Solid Waste Disposal Measurement Act also known as SB1016. Mark Leary, currently at CalRecycle, discusses "The Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989" - or AB 939. This law was revolutionary legislation that changed the way California managed its trash, its landfills, and most importantly its resources. Not only did AB 939 get Californians to divert a mandated 50 percent of their waste from its landfills, California has surpassed that goal and has achieved 58 percent diversion (in 2007)! But we are far from finished. While the 50 percent target remains unchanged, the passage of SB 1016 will improve the way jurisdictions measure their waste and put more emphasis on successful recycling and diversion program implementation. To learn more about reducing, reusing, and recycling, please go to www.CalRecycle.ca.gov. A transcript of this program is available by request.
