Hi guys, in this video I have a little rant about the Nikon D3100 Auto Exposure mode, as I was hoping when I purchased the camera that it had Manual Exposure (I should have researched).

just got your message, glad you figured it out.

You can change exposure in A mode by using exposure compensation, but only to 5 stops either way.

thanks for the A mode tip.5 stops either way isn't bad really. started shooting bits here and there and i'm feeling OK for the price. i'll keep renting the 5D mark ii for big money gigs but for cheapo bits and fun - this and my H4N Zoom will do the job just great.

How is the H4N? i was looking into them and quote fancied one, the idea of being able to plug a XLR shotgun mic into it really appeals to me.

nikon d3100 is easier to use for beginners and it's cheaper. The 550d probably will take slightly better pictures but d3100 still is one of the best entry levels especially taking price into consideration

use Shutter Priority. if you ar recording at 24p set your shutter to 1/50. if u are using 30p set it to 1/60. exposure lock b4 you shoot. a lot better than Aperture priority

FIXED! (kind of) Go to A (aperture priority) and use the exposure button with dial to override the light meter, it helps to get better exposure

I have noticed that if you play around with size and quality settings it stops being grainy and such. If you play around with settings, you'll find what you want.

thanks for this video. was looking to buy a nikond3100. one thing i did want in a camera was a full manual exposure. was looking to buy the d3100 since for its price is pretty good and thought it was okay becuase it had manual exposure.

Can anyone recommend a camera that has full manual exposure but doesn't hit the $1000 mark?

I just purchased the D3100, but I know what I'm getting into. I like having the low end of the spectrum, because I'm a novice to DSLRs, having been a Flipper, meaning the Flip Ultra HD. I want to do more with my videos, without breaking the bank, so this gives me the platform upon which to build better quality. I also bought a digital recorder, because the D3100 has no external mic ports, unlike most of the higher ones. I can marry the sound in post, anyway. It will arrive in a couple of weeks.
