The 48 Hour Film Project is a world-wide contest that challenges filmmaking teams to write, shoot, edit, score, and submit a short film within a given 48 hour time limit. This year our team, Homicidal Mandrill Productions, participated in the cinematic sport hosted in Asheville, North Carolina. Given three mandatory elements—a prop (a bottle), a character (Mike or Monica Vasquez, singer), and a line of dialogue ("That sure looks good to me")—and a randomly pulled genre (Silent Film), we competed against 30 other teams to produce the now award-winning short The Big Picture.
After being dealt this hand, our crew of about 15 creators set out with our pencils, cameras, lights, computers, and a seemingly endless supply of coffee and beer (thanks, Colin). Our first sleepless night, comprised of laughter and arguments, resulted in a screenplay and storyboard for a silent film noir crime thriller. The next 20-or-so hours were spent filming each shot in that storyboard in velvet costumes and three-piece suits in 100 degree weather...and brewing more coffee. We spent the next 10 hours sleeping. Just kidding. In those hours our editors risked eye-injury and overall sanity in front of their computer screens, meticulously making sequential sense of our silent scenes. And after all was said and done, the sound designers still had to compose a score that would carry the entire picture. The clock ticked faster and harder than ever, but 48 hours past and we made a movie. We couldn't have done it without the help from every single person involved, and for that Homicidal Mandrill can't thank anyone enough.
