In January 2009, a severe ice storm brought the greater Louisville area to its knees. The largest power outage on record had occurred, and vital transportation and communications infrastructures were crippled.
A state of emergency was declared. Faced with uncertain estimates for power restoration, many residents were urged to evacuate their homes and seek shelter from the harsh weather.
One man, unable to evacuate due to road conditions, found himself with no heat, little food, and absolutely no grasp of anything approaching a survival skill.
What he did have was a digital camera, two full battery packs, and a whole lot of free time.
