Mária Thomán

(1906,Budapest - 1948)

Hungarian violinist, daughter of pianist and music pedagogue István Thomán (prof. of Bartók). She studied with Hubay, Vecsey, Flesch and Alma Moodie.
She was one of those artists who stood out with the strength of her fantasy and force of representation. She gave concerts of great succes troghout Europe - partly as a soloist, partly with the accompaniment of philharmonic orchestras and chamber ensembles.
In 1935, on of her recitals triggered the following words by music critic Aladár Tóth: " As it were could enjoy the lady artist' instrumental fantasy for its own sake; her nobly resounding, magnificent tone, and, in general terms, that musician temperament which pulses with warm life even in its bravura, conquering the violin instrument " .

  • Thanks so much for posting this recording. Maria Thoman is my cousin, and this is the first time I've heard her play. She really was a fine musician.
