The bits of Our Last Summer you shouldn't hear!

BETTER AUDIO HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZXJJTcKvBY&fmt=18

Sorry for a dreadful explanation of the anomaly at 0:57 - listen to it instead!

  • Gosh, these anomalies are quite hard to hear! The only one I was familiar with is that glitch in the oboe part, but I thought it was just a tremolo ;)

The others: are hardly discernible for my ears. I just have the super trouper version remastered for the "ABBA the albums" box. Do you know if any of the anomalies have been erased in this version or am I deaf after all?

    Thanks for this intriguing vid!!

  • @Diotallevi73 The anomalies series was a result of very intensive listening to the songs over and over again, various different versions, both in phase and out of phase. It comes out of liking them so much I suppose! I show an easy way of connecting speakers in OOPS in the introduction to the series. I doubt if I could hear all the anomalies on casual listening. Occasionally I revisit some of the songs to check them, and it's always encouraging to read that other fans can hear them too.

  • @Diotallevi73 Also, Diotallevi, I listen extremely LOUD on headphones. I have just checked these anomalies, and I can still pick out most of them, and a few more - a stray BOOM just before "how dull it seems" - also Frida's word Football seems tampered with. There's a glitch on the right, as the syllables change! It's just a case of persevering with it. And I'm glad I said what I did about the solo - it is still just stupendously good!

  • I've listened to the sections that GPATRS refers to and I agree that there are definitely anomalies here that start/end the same sections of backing from the chorus. Another possible reason is that they simply didn't have time to record as many refrains as they needed so they tacked a few together - the analogue equivalent of copy/pasting.

  • At 0:43 & 0:55, 1:52 & 2:04, 2:11 & 2:23

These are EDIT points (those squeaky points that you say they are). 3 groups with 2 edit points and 12 seconds in between.

My theory is that they somehow didn't like this part (the 12 seconds) and chose some other take in between those 2 edit points. Note that the pair of edit points are not in last chorus only in first and second (twice in second as it repeats).

  • The anomaly at 0:55 is audible as a "wobble" during the word "Memories". At 0:57, as well as the extra "--ain" and boom I spoke of in the video there is a click. At 2:04 there is a boom, deftly covered by Aggie overdubbing "walking hand in hand-". the other anomalies Patrick speaks of are similar to my crappily worded "squeaky flutter".
