In the USA in the 1950s, young people used to do these dances at school... they were called "Maypole dances", I believe, and were traditional ancient Mayday celebrations. In Germany it's called the "Maibaum", and , at least in Bavaria, every town has its own Maibaum (Maypole) in the centre of the city!!
