The huge flames out the back when they are driving into position to race isn't the afterburner, its just raw fuel thats spit out the back and lit from the jets. It's called a dump and burn. Navy jet fighters do it all the time when they have to dump fuel for weight before a trap on the boat. The afterburners are the smaller flames when they are going full speed down the runway.
