Lyrics:
If God had a name, what would it be And would you call it to his face If you were faced with him in all his glory What would you ask if you had just one question
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets
And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home He's trying to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody calling on the phone Except for the pope maybe in rome
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if god was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home Just trying to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone Back up to heaven all alone Just trying to make his way home Nobody calling on the phone Except for the pope maybe in rome

Two millenia ago, God was one of us. He was crucified.
The question "What if God was one of us", I think, is poignant, especially today. And even if one doesn't subscribe to the Christian system, the question remains.
I think that the song just seemed foolish to be asking the question "what if god was one of us" because i could never really understand why he'd want to be, or why the singer would ask that question in the first place, but i think your explanation helps me understand better.
Seems to me that she's saying there's a bit of God in each of us. The person next to you could be God so we should be careful how we treat each other. Imagine if God decided to be human for a day and walked amongst us, seeing the world through our eyes and having humanistic feelings.
What is your take of the song that makes the premise border being ridiculous?
is there a deeper meaning behind this song? if so can someone explain, because, forgive me for saying, but the whole premise of the song seems somewhat ridiculous.
