What is consciousness? Is there consciousness within nature? Is there a supreme consciousness? Based on the classic Indian bhakti-yoga book, Jaiva Dharma by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura (2nd sloka dasa-mula tattva section.)

  • Isn't consciousness a function of the brain? I can't see why the assumption is made that everything is consciousness. For example, a rock isn't conscious. It doesn't react to it's surroundings.

  • @itsonelouder1 Good point. Scientists sometimes say consciousness is a function of the brain, but the world's wisdom traditions teach that the spirit is the conscious being, and the brain is just an instrument the spirit uses, like a person using a computer. Yes, rocks aren't conscious, but the idea is that everything including rocks is under the supervision of presiding devas, or deities, and ultimately the supreme conscious entity (sometimes called God, though that's a loaded word these days!)

  • @itsonelouder1 so everything is not conscious, but there is consciousness behind everything. like paint isn't conscious, but a painter is. Neat ideas, eh?

  • @MechanicalAngel1 If i was to be pushed into the road, I'm conscious of the road and traffic so can take preventative measures. If a ball is thrown into the road it isn't conscious of the traffic and can't take preventative measures, it simply obeys the laws of physics. Where's the cosciousness behind the ball?

  • @MechanicalAngel1 is the electron conscious or is it just obeying the laws of physics and chemistry? If I throw a ball against a wall and it bounces off it, does that make it conscious of the wall or isn't it simply obeying the laws of physics? Surely there's a difference.

  • @itsonelouder1 You are right consciousness is a function of the brain but at the sub-atomic level all matter is energy and in order for that rock to be a rock electrons "talk" to each other and are therefore conscious things.
