Well, they only gave up because they had a younger Doctor to fulfill the 'action hero' role. Plus, there was still Adric and Turlough. So much sexual tension? Have you not seen Romana and Four?

@Dubzoomember A shame they just about gave up on having male companions after UNIT stopped being a regular feature, they really have had some good ones. Though these days there's so much sexual tension force fed into Doctor/Companion relationships. Add to that their fondness for putting in gay characters for no reason and it might be for the best. Still, I hope they now put all that nonsense behind them and use Rory as the model for a new generation of male companions like those named above.

Rory is easily the best thing about the last two seasons. Spent 2000 years as a plastic Roman, married a hottie, and punched out Hitler.
