Absolutely great. In 1962 we used to call the girl behind the counter in the record shop in Manchester LaVern after her (she looked nothing like her!). I could listen to this again and again.

One of the greatest, she had a coca cola bottle shape when she was young, what a singer.

@serpico56 You would have absolutely loved LaVern...and especially live; I got the chance to meet and talk the great LaVern before and after her set at the Cinegrill in The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in the 90's. LaVern was so down to earth, autographed my Atlantic 78s and 45s, and was stunned to see the WEA-Atlantic compilation lp "The Phil Spector-Atlantic Records Sessions," of which LaVern's Phil-produced single was featured. I took pictures of her after the show with her son, beautiful lady.

Great never seen Laverne perform live and my favorite song of hers

Lavern had to really fight to get her records played on "white" radio in the 50's. She also fought to have Georgia Gibbs and other white singers from stealing her arrangements and covering her songs in that era. Us white kids were smart enough to buy the original black artists and helped them to get the fame they deserved.

If anyone of you want to hear LaVern at her best, take a listen to "Play It Fair". One of the greatest R & B hits of Lavern's from early in her career.

I wish someone anyone would post her original recording of this song and especially her original recording of Soul on Fire.
this was very lovely

Cool. I've always liked Elvis' version of this- as well as the original by Lonnie Johnson. The tempo change is kinda cool.
